Archisoul recently secured DA approval for alterations and additions to a heritage-listed house in North Balgowlah.
The house, known as ‘Grandview’, is a landmark site, being one of the original farmhouses in the area. It’s readily identifiable for its elevated symmetrical design and sandstone walls quarried from the site.
The design concept removed unsympathetic 1980s additions and replaced them with two contemporary, linear ‘barn’ structures. The new additions restore the building’s original symmetry, whilst clearly defining its old and new elements.
At the rear, a ‘cloister’ courtyard is formed between the open-plan kitchen/living area and a new rumpus room. A glazed gallery to the rear of the original house connects the two spaces with a swimming pool at the north of the garden completing the cloister.
Other contemporary features include dark timber cladding, steel-framed glazing and double-sided (indoor/outdoor) fireplace.
